Wood turned bowls start as pretty unglamorous chunks of wood. I mount them on the lathe, get showered in shavings, and little by little a rough block turns into a smooth curve you want to run your hand along.
I keep the shapes functional - wide enough for fruit, snacks, or keys - while letting the grain and any natural markings stay visible. Each bowl is sanded through multiple grits and finished with a food-safe or decorative finish, depending on the intended use.
They work just as well as everyday dishes as they do purely decorative pieces on a table or shelf. If you like the idea of useful art, these bowls are a nice middle ground: sturdy enough to live real lives, special enough that you will probably move them out of the way before any wild board games start.
